Corrine Garcia
Acoma Pueblo Pottery Storyteller Bowls
Corrine Garcia has been making pottery for 35 years.
She started when she was 7 years old with the help of her
mother and grandmother.
Corrine's pottery is made in the traditional hand coiled way.
She makes her own clay and paints and mixes ground up shards
from old pots into her new work.
Corrine's
favorite work is corrugated, storyteller bowls.
She pinches the clay to form symmetrical designs in the bowl.
She then adds children and animal figurines.
Corrine's inspiration for these bowlsare the
natural cisterns
on top of the Acoma mesa. Water runs off into these cisterns
after rainand they become a gathering place for children
and animals. Children play below as other children
watch from above.
Corrine captures these wonderful images in her clay bowls.
It is
interesting to note, Corrine's pinched or
corrugated technique gives the pottery a look similar
to that of fine line work.
The pinched clay fittingly forms water symbol patterns
