Marilyn Ray, and Diane Lewis
The Four Lewis Sisters of Acoma are noted for their
balanced, colorful, fine line designs incorporating
Membres figures and egg shell thin -
light as air pottery.
They have won
awards at every major pottery show
including the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonials.
Other family
members who are noted for their pottery are:
mother, Katherine Lewis; grandmother, Dolores S. Sanchez;
& sister in law, Sharon Lewis.
Seed
Bowls were used to store seed for spring planting.
The bowl protected seeds from weather and rodents.
The designs you see on these bowls are meant
to bring good fortuneand
a bountiful crop.
Many aspects of nature
are used to decorate seed bowls;
planting fields, rain, lightning, birds,
animals, lizards, insects...
Pottery must breathe (or
it will break) during firing.
The Lewis sisters often seem to make their seed bowls
without any opening. Part of the fun is finding
where a breathing hole was placed.
Usually a pin
sized hole is hidden in the design at
the top or in the bottom of the bowl.
